Welcome to SPOTLIGHT, a new gallery in which we showcase random, often lesser known works by the artists and creatives in our midst. We hope you enjoy the exhibition!
WALT JASCHEK
Writer/designer Walt Jaschek has co-created comics with the artists of High Adventure Comics for decades, cheering as they helped propel his concepts to “high”-er heights. Walt and Don Secrease concocted Mel Cool, the ORIGINAL MALL COP, back when Paul Blart was just a boy. They went on to create THE HEROBOTS (making a comeback soon!). With High Adventure master Paul Daly, they cooked up the menacing anti-hero RECYCLED MAN. All these books (and more) can be bought or downloaded at https://ko-fi.com/waltnow/shop. Here are just a few of the creative projects Walt Jaschek has brought to life…
PAUL DALY
Paul insists that his life has devolved from “lean and hungry like Cassius” to “just some old guy with a cat.” But the burgeoning portfolios strewn about his house tell a very different story. Along with an abundance of role-playing game artwork, Paul has contributed as writer and/or artist to numerous comic books, including The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Bounty, and The Man Who Would Be King. He and longtime friend Don Secrease put their heads together to spin the continuing tales of The Terranauts, which you can follow right here on High Adventure Comics. And, of course, Paul is the mighty force behind that legendary time-crossing swashbuckler, Tempest. What kinds of creations will come to life at Paul’s hand in the years ahead? Only his cat can say for sure, and she ain’t talking. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at a handful of dreams he’s already dreamed…
DON SECREASE
Mainly a storyboard artist and caricaturist, Don Secrease has been moving in and around comic book publishers for decades now. Having done comic strips and cartoons for colleges in the 70s, he and Rick Burchett and Paul Daly started a line of stripzines which included Swashbucklers, Adventure Road and Vista Graphics Presents. Don started out in comics with AC Comics and eventually worked with Caliber Press, Fantasy General, DC Comics (ghosting backgrounds here and First Comics for Rick), and let's not forget Solson Comics, where he and a friend of his (name of Jim Lee, anyone ever heard of him?) threw together Samurai Santa in a record 3 days. Here's just a taste of Don's artistic work...
RICK BURCHETT
If you’ve been around the comic book scene the last 45 years, you’ve, no doubt, read or seen Rick Burchett’s work… whether it was writing, pencilling or inking. He’s worked with a list of companies that includes DC Comics, Marvel Comics, First Comics, AC Comics, Archie, Capital Comics, Atomic Pulp and more, on numerous titles like Batman, Blackhawk, Black Hood, Justice League, Green Lantern, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Kid Colt, Jinx, the Phantom, Gravedigger… and that’s just a smattering! He’s an award-winning artist who has spent years not only as a comic book creator, but as an illustrator and storyboard artist. Online, he and Greg Rucka created the Lady Sabre comic strip and he’s worked on such comic strips as Dick Tracy and Funky Winkerbean, and storyboarded shows like Justice League Unlimited. Here is just a small sampling of Rick's abundant, creative output...
ERIC JAMES
Eric James poured out the best years of his life in the Deep South, managing a public radio station, freelancing as a sound designer, and eventually working as a photographer and videographer. In 2017, after finally acknowledging the Luddite within, he packed his bags and headed back home to St. Louis, where he turned his attention to his first love—painting. Now, he spends countless hours playing catch-up, learning to properly hold a brush, and swindling free art lessons from his dear and patient friends. With much creative input from Paul and Don, Eric also maintains the High Adventure Comics website. You can find more of Eric’s artwork on his website, at:
Bill has decades of comics experience ranging from the good girl art of AC Comics to the hilarious fast food comic strip ‘Burgurz’. He’s well known for his commissioned comic art and is a regular contributor to the Pin-up Women of Terranauts you’ll find on the High Adventure Comics Homepage. Although semi-retired now, Bill still handles Photoshop design and Prepress for his wife’s lighting company.
LORENZO LIZANA
Lorenzo Lizana has created art for comic books, children’s storybooks, product packaging, toy and consumer goods design, storyboards for commercials and animated television programming, websites and more. Specializing in licensed character interpretation and design, his distinguished list of clients had included Disney, Warner Bros., Trendmasters Toys, Brown Shoe Company, and many others. These days, he’s launching his own line of graphic novels and children’s books under the name Mach One Entertainment, the Speed of Imagination!
KIMBERLY AUSTIN DALY
You may know Kim Daly as Paul Daly's Better Half! But are you aware of her many contributions to the World of Art? Kim majored in Art, and among other things, she has worked as a toy designer, a book illustrator, and a fine artist. She especially loves watercolor. Here are just a few examples of her work.
