Paul Daly

Picture
“Hi, I’m Paul Daly and I approve this bio. As a working freelance artist for over 30 years, I could give you a laundry list of things I’ve worked on but let’s just stick with what is pertinent. For the most part, I’ve mainly done role-playing game art (you know, Dungeons and Dragons, etc.), a smattering of comic book work and a host of other things.

”Back in the 80s, Don Secrease and I created a group of scientist-adventurers, The Terranauts, who came together to investigate the paranormal. This was prior to Jurassic Park, Stargate and the X-Files, all of which had similar elements to our stories. Only one official comic book was released but years later we revised the  adventure and moved it into the 1950s so we could better emulate the movies we loved back in the day. You know the ones... The Attack of... The Beast From... etc, etc. The strip appeared on the newly minted internet on a couple of sites and has evolved into our current venture.

“At the same time we started the Terranauts, I was doing role playing game art for several titles and companies. Some of the titles, like Space:1889 and Deadlands, were steampunk before that genre was coined. Out of that, I created my own Victorian Age character, a British major named Tempest. His adventures set on the back burner while I did other things, like writing the original incarnation of Athena Voltaire, which was nominated for an Eisner Award. But with the rise of the steampunk genre I decided to dust off the adventures of my intrepid Major and get him back in the game.

”And that’s where we stand. I do hope you come along for the ride...

“Now let me tell you of the days of High Adventure....”

Don Secrease

Picture
A life long fan of comics, Don joined Interfan in the 70s where he drew spot illoes for fanzines. In 1980, Rick Burchett, Paul Daly and Don created the Swashbucklers stripzine which ran for 4 issues and became a jumping on point for various other projects. He joined AC Comics in the early 80s and worked on Black Diamond and Colt as writer & artist and Femforce.

In 1986, Paul Daly and Don created the Terranauts (a then-contemporary 8-member 80s team), pitching them to Fantasy General Comics. After one issue (and one in the can), Fantasy folded up and the title was put on hold. Don also assisted Rick Burchett, ghost-inking backgrounds on such titles as E-Man, Blackhawk and Justice League and penciling one-shot stories for Black Hood. He also worked with Caliber Comics producing single issue titles as Crow Killer and One-Shot Western (with Rick Burchett). Then at Solson Publishing where he penciled a couple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fighting Techniques comics (and, yes, he and Jim Lee were responsible for the notorious Samurai Santa comic (“We only had one weekend to produce it... ask Jim.”).

For a St. Louis newspaper, Don, along with other contributors, put together Family Funnies, a full page of gag strips, once a week. Don worked on the western ‘Sons of the Saddle’ strip and a sci-fi strip Space Ark Z.

For the web in 2000, Paul and Don produced new adventures of the Terranauts where they continued for
some years.

As of 2018, he’s penciling the Black Owl in  Sleuth Comics no. 1 for Atomic Pulp Comics.

Rick Burchett

Picture
Rick’s been around comics all his life but began drawing and writing them professionally during the early 80s. His early work appeared in First Comics, Capital Comics, AC Comics and Pacific Comics in such titles as E-Man, Black Diamond, America’s Greatest Westerns and Man Of Rust. From there, Rick went to DC Comics where he made his mark on Blackhawk and Batman, based on the animated series (where he and Ty Templeton and Paul Dini received the Eisner Award in 1996 and again in 1999 with Ty  and Terry Beatty for Gotham Adventures).

At DC, he also worked on Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Justice League, the Flash and the regular Batman books as well as Vertigo Comics’ Pulp Fantastic and DC’s Impact series the Black Hood, plus stepping in to help keep many titles on schedule as guest penciler. At Wildstorm he penciled Storming Paradise.

Moving over to Marvel, Rick became regular penciler on She-Hulk and special Spider-Man and Kid Colt issues. In recent years he’s expanded his talents to Moonstone’s the Phantom, Oni Press’ Queen & Country and Archie’s Digest series and Jinx specials. Recently he’s penciled the Batman:  Brave & Bold series based on the hit tv animated show.

For the web, he and Greg Rucka have teamed up to give life to Lady Sabre & the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether.

He’s spent the last few years drawing Funky Winkerbean and, as of 2018, been busy designing characters for Atomic Pulp Comics where he’ll be working on Crom, the Barbarian, and Black Owl.

Bill Lux

Picture
Bill has three decades of comics experience ranging from the good girl art of AC Comics to the hilarious fast food comic strip ‘Burgurz’. He’s well known for his comic art commissioned work and the first choice to illustrate the women of the Terranauts you’ll see on the High Adventure Homepage.

Lorenzo Lizana

Picture
Lorenzo's work on his character, Scarab, and an infinite number of character designs has made him a much sought after commodity in the commercial business. In children’s books, he helped create Dollar Bill and is now a creative director/artist/ editor for Lion Forge Comics. His digital coloring and finesse of the Union Jack emboldens the Tempest frontispiece on our Home Page.

Eric James

Picture
Eric James first met Paul Daly and his league of extraordinary gentlemen…and gentlewomen…back in the early 80s, when they both worked at The Book Emporium in South County-St. Louis. From there, his exploits led him to other bookstores in other cities, managing a public radio station in the Deep South, directing theatre, and shooting photo and video for personal and commercial projects. Often, during his spare moments, he quietly applied lead marks, ink spots, or random blobs of paint to otherwise perfectly fine scraps of paper, in an attempt to emulate his more creative counterparts. With the understanding that there are no friends like old friends, Eric recently returned to his beloved St. Louis, where these days he spends most of his time dousing canvas in watercolor and oil. He hangs a few of his works out to dry on his website, www.amomentssunlight.com.  It has been his great privilege to lend his somewhat limited technical know-how to the launch of the much-anticipated High Adventure Comics website, content in the realization that his friends’ works will now reach a wider audience than they had hitherto. Eric is also delighted to conclude this brief, yet all too comprehensive biography with the word hitherto.www.amomentssunlight.com
